Ophthalmic Medical Assistant

An ophthalmic medical assistant is a trained medical assistant who specializes in ophthalmology. Ophthalmology is a specialized branch of medicine that primarily deals with the anatomy, physiology, diseases and injuries associated with the eye. After completing their training in the regular Medical Assistant training programs, the MAs who wish to pursue a career specializing as an ophthalmic medical assistant may be required to go through further training and education pertaining to ophthalmology. This specialized education and training associated with ophthalmic MA could be sometimes provided by the employer, through their continuing professional development programs or specialized training programs offered through schools. However, it must be noted that training offered through an employer may be specific to the employer’s needs, preparing the MA for work in their particular practice only. Whereas, training offered through schools may be more extensive giving the individual the opportunity to work in an optometry practice in any area.
