QTP stands for QuickTest Professional, also called as UFT Unified Functional Testing. It is an automated functional Testing tool that helps testers to execute automated tests in order to identify any errors, defects or gaps in comparison to the expected results of the application under test. It was designed by Mercury Interactive and later on acquired by HP and now MicroFocus. QTP / UFT uses Microsoft’s VBScript for its test procedures, and to manipulate the objects and controls of the application under test. VBScript is a programming language where several existing functions & resources are easily available for implementation. QTP uses “zero-configuration” Keyword Driven testing technology. This helps in faster test creation, easier maintenance, and a powerful data-driving capability. QTP can automatically introduce checkpoints to verify application properties and functionality, for example to validate output or check link validity. QTP allows entry of test data into the Data Table, an integrated spreadsheet with the full functionality of Excel, to manipulate data sets and create multiple test iterations, without programming. This helps in expanding test case coverage. In QTP / UFT Data can be typed in or imported from databases, spreadsheets, or text files. QTP has an easy to use Data table integration.
The Unique Smart Object Recognition feature in QTP Identifies objects, even if objects change from build to build, thereby enabling reliable unattended script execution. QTP supports functional testing of all popular environments, like Windows, Web, .Net, Visual Basic, ActiveX, Java, SAP, Siebel, Oracle, PeopleSoft, terminal emulators, and Web services.
QTP can easily create and implement Microsoft Object Models such as Outlook objects, ADO objects, FileSystem objects, supports DOM, WSH, etc. QTP’s auto-documentation technology renders test documentation and test creation to a single step. A test script can be easily run by simply pressing a Record button and an application can be used to perform a typical business process.
